Steel Entry Doors
If your entry is covered by a porch and you want strength and security without paying for fiberglass, steel is the honest choice. Strong. Secure. Clean factory-painted finish. Lower cost to get a solid door on your house.
And I will give you the trade-off up front, because most salespeople will not. Steel can dent. If the skin gets breached and left alone, the bottom can rust over the years. Under a covered entry that is rarely a problem. On a fully exposed, sun-and-rain-hit door, I would point you to fiberglass instead. That is the truth, even though steel is the cheaper sale for me.
How the door is built
- Foamed-in-place polyurethane core. That is where the insulation value comes from.
- Galvanized steel facings. They resist cracking and splitting and give you the security steel is known for.
- Magnetic and compression weatherstrip. An airtight seal all the way around.
- Thermally broken, self-draining sill. Keeps the cold out and lets water escape.
- Heavy-duty ball-bearing hinges and a full lock block. Takes any lockset or deadbolt you want.
- Kiln-dried, wrapped frame. Will not warp or rot behind the trim.
Who it is right for
Covered porches and sheltered entries. Budget-minded jobs where you still want a real, secure door. Side doors, garage-to-house doors, and rental units. When the door is protected, steel gives you most of the performance for less money.
The honest part
Steel doors carry separate manufacturer warranties on each component, and I will get you the exact terms before you buy anything. But here is the line that matters across every door I sell. Bad installation voids the coverage. A perfect door hung crooked in an unsealed opening will stick, leak, and let you down. I install it square, shimmed, and sealed, and I stand behind that personally.
